COLLECTION OF MISCELLANEOUS PAPERS relating largely to military and political events in the first half of the 17th century in Italy and elsewhere; 1594-1643. Italian, Latin and Spanish. Partly printed. Contemporary index of contents (ff. 1-2). Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. Ownership inscription in ink at top of f. 190 (see art. 21) 'Bonifatii Vanozzij' (Vanozzi is also the author of art. 7). Old signature 'Tom. Proveditore generale della serenissima Republica di Venetia et il signor ingegniere Gasparo Molina, stampato in Napoli, et in Milano', a response to an anonymously published (but attributed within the text itself to Giulio Cesare Braccini of Lucca) pro-Spanish tract Dialogo tra il Provveditor generale ... on the formation of an anti-Catholic alliance of European powers in the territorial dispute over the Valtellina in the Thirty Years War, (on Braccini, see Giovanni Mazzuchelli, Gli scrittori d'Italia... vol. 2, pt. 4 (Brescia, 1763); both Braccini's work and this reply to it are referred to in Francesco Saverio Quadrio, Dissertazioni critico-storiche intorno alla Rezia di qua dalle Alpi, oggi detta Valtellina (Milan, 1755), vol. 2, p. 255; Quadrio indicates that the author of this attack on Braccini is unknown to him); circa 1621. 'Risposta alla lettera scritta contro la serenissima Republica di Venetia dal Signor Duca di Ossuna ViceRè di Napoli alla Santità di nostro Signore Papa Paolo quinto', dated 30 May 1617, a Venetian attack on the viceroy of Naples, Pedro Tellez y Giron, Duke of Osuna, and his aggressively pro-Spanish and anti-Venetian policy; 1617. This letter, together with a second, was published as a separate tract and later re-issued as part of Raccolta di scritture seguite nelli presenti motti d'Italia (S.l., s.n., 1615-1619. 'Oratione academica intorno alle donne', a discourse in praise of the 'Signora Principessa [Caterina] Malaspina', apparently in her presence, as a representative of the virtues of her sex, in reply to a fellow academician's speech against women (Caterina Malaspina was the daughter of Giuseppe Malaspina, born 1533, and Alvisa (or Luigia) Doria - see Guido Guagnini, I Malaspina: origini, fasti, tramonto di una dinastia (Milan, 1973), tav. III - and the wife of Antoniotto Lengueglia, all members of prominent Genoese families;); late 16th cent. Italian. Copy. Inc.
