Pen-flourished initials on ff. 2, 3, 139, 140, 165, 166. Table of contents (f. 1), added later. Old signatures 'Tom. LIII' in pencil in upper right corner of f. i, and '497.' in ink in fourth spine compartment: identifiable with Mattei MS. 497 (vol. 53 of 'Memorie diverse') in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 23v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '103' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8294-8303, 8305-8306, 8308-8314, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 103 (part).
Paper; ff. 224+xiii, plus two unfoliated blanks after f. 125, three after ff. 138, 187, four after f. 164, and one after f. 188. Old foliation in ink '1-222' (ff. 2-224), repeating no. 137. Composite volume. 260 x 195mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. Five Italian hands. Late 17th-cent. Italian binding of full vellum.

'Relatione del Clarissimo Messer Bernardo Nauagero Ambasciatore dell'Illustrissima Signoria di Venetia a Carlo V Imperatore nell'anno 1565' [title repeated on f. 3], relazione of Spain by Bernardo Navagero, Venetian ambassador at Madrid (1543-1546); dated here 1565, but issued in 1546. Italian. Copy. Inc. (f. 3) 'In questa Relatione che è l'ultima parte della legatione mia', expl. 'e con la gratia dell'Eccellentissime Signorie Vostre'. Other copies in Add. 8279 (art. l, ff. 337-436v), 10197, and 48153 (Yelverton MS. 164; art. 6, ff. 101-123v). Published by Albèri, s. i, vol. 1 (Florence, 1839), pp. 289-368.

'Instruttione inviata dal Re Cattolico alli suoi ministri in Francia nella liberatione della Città di Parigi dall'assedio, per trattare dello stato et incaminare gli affari del regno al fine che Sua Maestà pretende', instructions from King Philip II of Spain to his ambassadors at Paris relating to the negotiations for the election of the new king of France at the end of the siege of Paris in 1590; circa 1590. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'La costanza con la quale la Città di Parigi s'è conservata per la nostra Santa Fede'.

'Relatione delle cause per le quali è stato fatto morire Monsignor Mascambruno Sotto Datario' [title repeated on f. 140], relazione of the reasons for the execution of the Auditor of the Contraddette and forger Francesco Canonici (1609-1652), called Mascambruno; circa 1652. 'Discorso del Padre Fra' Biagio Magno alla Santità di Nostro Signore Alessandro 7o circa lo sgravamento delle Communità dello stato Ecclesiastico', discourse to Pope Alexander VII by Fra' Biagio Magno [?] relating to tax duties imposed in the papal states; circa 1655-1667.
