Title:

MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTION of tracts, papers and letters relating to Genoa and the Netherlands; circa 1547-1625. Italian and Latin. Copies, partly imperfect. Table of contents (f. 1), added later. Old signatures 'Tom. LIV' in pencil in upper right corner of f. i, and '498' in ink in fifth spine compartment: identifiable with Mattei MS. 498 (vol. 54 of 'Memorie diverse') in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 23v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '53 / PM' in pencil in lower edge. '103' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8294-8303, 8305-8307, 8309-8314, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 103 (part).

2. ff. 20-23v. 'Forma del Capitolato provisionale concluso dal Cardinale Morone per sedare i tumulti di Genova l'anno 1575', draft heads of agreement drawn by Cardinal Giovanni Morone to end the civil war in Genoa between the old ruling oligarchy and the new noble families in 1575-1576; 1575. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'Gl'Illustrissimi Ministri delli tre Principi, et qui sottoscritti, havendo con ogni diligenza considerato', expl. 'G. Cardinal Morone Legato / N. Ambasciator di / N. Copy, 17th cent. Imperfect. Inc. 'Igitur postquam huius Reipublicae regendae ratio', breaking at 'rerum militarium peritissimus. Eodem tempore'.

4. ff. 52-102. 'Comentarius de rebus a Comite Fontano in Belgio gestis', commentary on the achievements of an unidentified Conte Fontano in the Netherlands before the arrival of Cardinal Archduke Albert of Austria as the new governor general in 1596; after 1596. Latin. Copy. Inc. 'Hispaniensi classe procellis potius quam hostium virtute discecta'.

5. ff. 103-113. 'Delle controversie tra Gomuristi et Armeniani Heretici nelle provincie unite de Paesi Bassi / Loro sinodi et intelligenze', relazione of heretical sects in the Netherlands between 1597-1620; 1620. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'È voluntà di Dio che l'heretici habbiano sempre l'animo inquieto'.
