MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTION of papers and tracts relating to Rome, Poland, France, the German Empire, and Spain; circa 1568-1675. Italian. Copies. Table of contents (f. 1), added later. Old signature 'Tom. LVIII' in pencil in upper right corner of f. i, and '502' in ink in fifth spine compartment: identifiable with Mattei MS. 502 (vol. 58 of 'Memorie diverse') in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 23v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '103' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8294-8303, 8305-8310, 8312-8314, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 103 (part).
Paper; ff. 90+xxiii, plus two unfoliated blanks after ff. 18, 72, and one after f. 77. Old foliation in ink '1-95' (ff. 2-90, plus following blank flyleaf), including blanks after ff. 18, 72, 77. Composite volume. 296 x 214mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. Four Italian hands. Late 17th-cent. Italian binding of full vellum.

1. ff. 2-18v. 'Condotta e fatti rivelati del Cardinal Paluzzo Nipote di Clemente X' [title in the table of contents], notes given to Pietro Mocenigo, Venetian Ambassador at Rome (1672-1675), relating to the letter distributed to foreign ambassadors in Rome and relating to the dispute between them and Cardinal Paluzzo Paluzzi Altieri degli Albertoni, nephew and prime minister of Pope Clement X (1670-1676); circa 1674-1675. Italian. Copy. Introduction (f. 2) 'All'Illustrissimo ... Pietro Mocenigo Ambasciatore per la Serenissima Republica di Venetia presso la Santa Sede / Illustrissimo ... spero che sarà capitata nelle mani di Vostra Eccellenza la lettera', inc. (f. 4) 'Chiavi e note d'alcune cose più principali che nell'annessa scrittura si contengono per instrutione de Forastieri'. Another copy in Add. 8394 (art. 14, ff. 224-236), where it is preceded (art. 13, item f, ff. 207-223) by the Memorial to the ambassadors, lacking here.
2. ff. 19-64. 'Conseguenze dannose et utili dal non dare e dare soccorso alla Polonia / Sotto l'anno 1674', tract relating to the conflict between Poland and the Ottoman Empire; 1674. Italian. Copy. Inc. (f. 20) 'Tremendo a Christiani è il nome Turco'; inc. (f. 42) 'Pace, guerra e soccorsi tutto difficoltato alla Polonia / E siamo giunti al gran caso di che temevano i Polacchi'.
3. ff. 65-72v. 'Relazione del succeduto in Parigi sopra la sottoscrittione del formulario', relazione of Paris relating to the Jansenist heresy; n.d. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'La santa memoria d'Innocenzio Xo con diligenza e maturità necessara condennò'. Another copy in Add. 8393, art. 4, ff. 16-19.
4. ff. 73-77v. 'Alcune ragioni per le quali sua Maestà Cesarea concepisce ferma speranza che a sue preghiere la somma Clemenza di Sua Santità Padre Commune s'indurrà a dare la porpora al Marchese Gustano [sic] Adolfo de Baden Durlach Coadiutore di Fulda nel medesimo tempo che ad essa sublimerà l'Abbazia d'Albret, come ne fa instanza il Re Christianissimo', request of the Emperor Leopold I to Pope Clement X for the concession of the cardinal's hat to Gustav Adolf, Markgraf von Baden-Durlach, coadiutor and later abbot of Fulda, who was in fact elected cardinal in pectore in 1671, with the name of Bernhard Gustav; before 1671. 'Instruttione al Commandante Maggiore di Castiglia Ambasciator in Roma', instructions given by King Philip II of Spain to Don Juan de Zúñiga y Requesens, Comendador Mayor of Castile, when appointing him ambassador to Rome; 1568. Italian translation. Copy. Inc. 'Il Re / Instruttione di quanto voi Il Commandante Maggior di Castiglia del nostro Conseglio di Stato e nostro Ambasciatore in Roma havete da fare in quella Corte', expl.
