Old signature 'Tom. LV' in pencil in upper right corner of f. i, and '499' in ink in fifth spine compartment: identifiable with Mattei MS. 499 (vol. 55 of 'Memorie diverse') in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 23v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '54 / PM' in pencil in lower edge. '103' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8294-8303, 8305-8311, 8313-8314, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 103 (part).

1. ff. 2-52. 'Relazione della Costa di Barbaria da Damiata sino a Cercelli' [title in the table of contents], relazione of the Mediterranean coast of Barbary in North Africa; n.d. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'Per esecutione di quanto Vostra Signoria Illustrissima s'è degnato ordinare si è preso informatione di tutta la Costa di Barbaria'. Including (ff. 30-49v) description of Tripoli, the island of Jerba, Tunis, Algiers, and (ff. 50-52) an account of the possibility to convert North African populations to Christianity.
2. ff. 53-73v, 74-77, 78-84. Miscellaneous tracts relating to the captivity of Charles de Valois, Comte d'Auvergne and Duc d'Angouleme, son of King Charles IX of France, and of Charles de Gontaut, Baron and [later] Duc de Biron and Marechal de France; circa 1602. Italian. Copies. Charles de Valois and de Baron were imprisoned for turning against Henry IV in favour of Duke Charles Emmanuel I of Savoy, de Biron was executed in July 1602, while Charles de Valois remained in prison until 1606. Inc. (f. 53) 'Osservatione nella prigionia del Conte d'Overnia et del Duca di Birone / Chi attentamente considera le conditioni et qualità del Signor Duca di Savoia', of which another copy in Vienna, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, cod. 5555, ff. 157-186; inc. 4. ff. 99-117v. 'Annali della Mirandola', chronicle of Mirandola up to the death of Count Girolamo Pico; after 1588. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'Costantino Magno Imperatore ebbe tre figlioli', expl. 'sostentatione del sangue Pico, descendente dal dicto fu Illustrissimo Conte Giovanni Francesco'. A relazione including another account of the history of Mirandola in Add. 8261, ff. 43v-54.

(f. 197) 'Lettera di Monsignor Cirillo Commendatore di Santo Spirito di Roma a Monsignor Mutio Calino Vescovo di Terni sopra le cose della Riforma / Laqueus contritus est, et nos liberati sumus, e ne sia lodata'; inc.
