MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTION of papers and tracts relating to Father Nicolò Ridolfi, the burial place of St. Peter and the League against the Turks signed in 1571 by Venice, Spain, and the Holy See, during the papacy of Pius V; circa 1570-1644. Italian and Latin. Copies. Table of contents (f. 1), added later. Old signature 'Tom. LX' in pencil in upper right corner of f. i, and '504' in ink in fifth spine compartment: identifiable with Mattei MS. 504 (vol. 60 of 'Memorie diverse') in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 23v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '45' in pencil in lower edge. '103' in pencil in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8294-8303, 8305-8312, 8314, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 103 (part).

'Come fosse Introdotta la Causa del Padre Reverendissimo Ridolfi con le risposte alle narrative di Brevi delle Commissioni d'essa e alle inventioni d'alcuni particolari delitti', papers relating to the ecclesiastical court case against Father Nicolò Ridolfi, General of the Order of the Dominicans; [1643]. Italian and Latin. Copy. Inc. '1. Doppo che del mese di febraro dell'anno 1642 era stato commandato al Reverendissimo Padre Nicolò Ridolfi, Generale dell'Ordine de Predicatori di intimare in Genova'. Including (ff. 69-72v) a detailed table of contents, entitled (f. 69) 'Come fosse introdotta la Causa del Padre Reverendissimo Ridolfi...', inc. (f. 70) 'Indice delle cose più notabili contenute nella presente scrittura / L'intentione che s'hebbe nel fare intimare il Capitolo di Genova'.
2. ff. 73-102. 'Breve relatione del sito qualità e forma antica della Confessione sacratissima di San Pietro dove si raccontano ancora molti ornamenti fatti in quella in varii tempi da diversi Sommi Pontefici / Di Michel Angelo Lonigo da Este / Alla Santità di Nostro Signore Papa Urbano VIII', relazione of the 'confession' or burial place of St. Peter in the Vatican basilica by Michele Angelo Lonigo, possibly identifiable with Michele Lonigo, deputy Prefect of the Vatican Library and Master of Ceremonies of the Papal Chapel at the time of Paul V, Gregory XV and Urban VIII; circa 1623-1644. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'Beatissimo Padre / Affermano quasi tutti li più sinceri scrittori'. Another copy in the Raccolta Mongardino of the Archivio di Stato at Turin.

'Discorso di Don Luis de Torres Chierico di Camera mandato da Papa Pio V a trattare in Spagna la lega contro il Turco', collected papers and correspondence relating to the negotiations with Philip II of Don Luis de Torres, Clerk of the Apostolic Chamber and papal Ambassador to Spain to negotiate the League; 1570. Italian. Copies. Inc. (f. 104) 'Sostanza del ragionamento di Pio V fatto a Don Luis de Torres Chierico di Camera Apostolica a di 27 febraro 1570 / Michele Suriano Ambasciatore de Venetiani in Roma da conto a Papa Pio V de grandi apparamenti del Turco', expl. 'Don Alessandrino di Roma al Torres a 17 maggio 1570 / Che s'erano avute le sue lettere ... avanti il negotio della lega'. Including the papal instructions to de Torres, dispatches to and from the Pope and his nephew Cardinal Michele Bonelli, commonly known as Cardinal Alessandrino, and de Torres' memorial to King Philip II.
