RELAZIONI AND DIPLOMATIC INSTRUCTIONS relating to the ambassadorial relationships between the papal court and Spain, Florence, France, and Venice, during the Thirty Years War and the papacies of Gregory XV, Urban VIII; circa 1621-1644. The MS. also includes: - (a) Italian translation (art. 8) of La liberté glorieuse de Monaco by Charles de Vernasque Ferriol (Paris, 1643), followed by the letter (art. 9) from from Honoré II to Juan de Velasco de la Cueva, Count of Siruela, Spanish governor of Milan, 1641; - (b) political advice (art. 11) of Gregory XV to his nephew Ludovico Ludovisi, created cardinal 15 Feb. 1621, 1622; - (c) political advice (art. 13) of Pope Paul III to his nephew Alessandro Farnese, created cardinal on 18 Dec. 1534, circa 1534; - (d) relazione (art. 14) of Austria and Germany, written during the reign of the Emperor Ferdinand II, elected 28 Aug. 1619, circa 1620-1621; - (e) letter (art. 15) with political advice to Francisco Gómez de Sandoval y Rojas, Duque de Lerma and later Cardinal (1618), from Antonio Perez, Secretary and Minister of King Philip II of Spain, followed by Perez's life, circa 1600. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '106' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Copy, 17th cent. Inc. 'Voi ci havete detto che i Cardinali trattano del Papato'. The 'Ricordi' includes remarks on Cardinals Ercole Gonzaga, Giovanni Salviati, Niccolò Gaddi and Niccolò Ridolfi (ff. 226-226v).
