COLLECTION OF MISCELLANEOUS PAPERS relating largely to military and political events during the last fourteen years of the Thirty Years War in Italy and France; 1634-1648. Italian and Latin. Partly printed. Contemporary index of contents headed 'Indice del presente tomo 75' (ff. 1-1v). Old signatures in pencil 'Tom. LXXXVII' in upper right corner of f. i: identifiable with Mattei MS. 531 (vol. 87 of 'Materie diverse') in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 24. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '106' in pencil in top left hand corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8317-8321, 8323-8332, 8346, and 8347, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 106.
Paper; ff. 338+ii, plus six unfoliated (in modern pencil foliation) interleaved blanks after ff. 23, 128, 197, 316 and 323. Modern foliation in pencil '1-338' (followed here); old foliation in ink (including blanks, omitting index) '1-340'. Composite volume. Circa 255 x 185mm. Several Italian hands. Late 17th-cent. Italian binding of full vellum, with red edges, similar to the bindings on Add. 8320 and 8324.
Contents as follows:
1. ff. 2-23v. 'Lettera al principe Tomaso di Savoia in Talamone', dated from Rome July 1646, signed pseudonymously 'Silvano d'Alpina', a letter to Prince Tommaso Francesco di Savoia-Carignano (1596-1656), the younger son of Duke Charles Emmanuel I, who was encamped at the nearby town of Talamone during the French naval blockade of the Tuscan port of Orbetello, the principal town in the 'Stato dei Presidi', the territory within Tuscany under Spanish rule, in 1646; 1646. Italian. Copy. Inc. (f. 3) 'Oh quanto per lo più riescono vani i pensieri de gli huomini', expl. 'con che per fine à voi humilmente m'inchino'.
2. ff. 24-45. The dialogue represents the stage in the conclave when the brothers' hopes of seeing their favoured candidate Cardinal Giulio Sacchetti elected had failed; Francesco persuades his brother that it would be politic to vote for Pamphilj, despite the threat which he represented to their interests. Italian. Copy. Inc. (f. 25) 'Cardinale Antonio. Cardinal Francesco. Antonio. Credevo frattel mio che la fortuna', expl. perché conforme ne insegna Cicerone Non omnia quae possumus debemus'. MS. copy in Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze, Magl. XXX, 40 (ff. 298-312) (see Vittorio Tocco, Ideali d'indipendenza in Italia durante la preponderanza spagnuola (Messina, 1926), p. 271, n. 2; the dialogue is listed as no. 66 in the appended 'Indice di scritture anonime e pseudonime')
