XCIV' in upper right corner of f. i, and '538' in ink in fourth spine compartment: identifiable with Mattei MS. 538 (vol. 94 of 'Materie diverse') in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 24. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '106' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8317-8327, 8329-8332, 8346, and 8347, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 106 (part).

'Censura o Giuditio sopra certa scrittura intitolata Ristretto de gl'inconvenienti che risultaranno dal negare Nostro Signore l'assolutione della quale il Signor Duca di Nivers supplica Sua Santità', anonymous tract in favour of the absolution of King Henri IV of France (1589-1610), and relating to the embassy of Ludovico Gonzaga, Duke of Nevers, offering to Pope Clement VIII ((1592-1605) the act of obedience of Henry IV after his conversion to Catholicism in July 1593; circa 1593-1594.
