The MS. includes: - (a) manifesto (art. 1) of King John IV of Portugal, 1647; - (b) discourse, letter and terms of agreement (arts. 2, 6-7) relating to the reconciliation of the Barberinis with Pope Innocent X, 1646; - (c) speech (art. 3) on Tuscany's neutrality addressed to Grand Duke Ferdinand II of Tuscany by Traiano Maffei, 1648; - (d) relazione (art. 4) of the siege and surrender of Candia (Crete), 1645; - (e) manifesto (art. 5) of Perugia, probably written during the so-called war of Castro, circa 1641-1649; - (f) two letters (art. 8) from King Ladislas VII of Poland (1632-1646) to Innocent X (1644-1655) and to his brother John Casimir (afterwards King John Casimir II), relating to John Casimir's election as cardinal and his right to mantain in royal title, 1646; - (g) anonymous treatise (art. 9) dedicated to Cardinal Girolamo Grimaldi, relating to the bad government of Italy, 1646; - (h) brief history (art. 10) of the origins of Venetian noble families to the year 1482, n.d; - (i) two relazioni of Venice (arts. 11-12) presented to Philip III of Spain by the Spanish ambassador Alfonso della Cueva, Marqués de Bedmar, after he left Venice in June 1618 under suspicion by the Venetians on involvement in a plot against the Republic, 1619-1620; - (j) will (art. 13) of Cardinal Armand Jean Du Plessis, Duc de Richelieu, translated into Italian by Lorenzo Borzaga and offered to Carlo Conti, colonel in the papal army, 1644. Table of contents (f. 1). Old signatures in pencil 'Tom. XCV' in upper right corner of f. i, and '539' in ink in fifth spine compartment: identifiable with Mattei MS. 539 (vol. 95 of 'Materie diverse') in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 24. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '106' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8317-8328, 8330-8332, 8346, and 8347, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 106 (part).
