RELAZIONE of Rome and Petition to the Pope, possibly Innocent X(1644-1655); circa 1644-1656. Italian. Copies. The relazione of Rome (art. 1) relates to the recently elected Pope Alexander VII (1655-1667). Table of contents (f. 1) added later. Old signatures in pencil 'Tom. XCVI' in upper right corner of f. i, and '540' in ink in fifth spine compartment: identifiable with Mattei MS. 540 (vol. 96 of 'Materie diverse') in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 24. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '106' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8317-8329, 8331, 8332, 8346, and 8347, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 106 (part).

'Relatione dell'Eccellentissimo Signor Giovanni Pesaro Cavaliere e Procuratore di San Marco nel ritorno dell'Ambascieria straordinaria alla Santità di Nostro Signore Papa Alessandro Settimo / 1655', written by Giovanni Pesaro together with Bertuccio Valier, Alvise Contarini and Nicolò Sagredo upon their return from the extraordinary embassy to the Papal Court in 1655 to congratulate Alexander VII on his election to the Papacy; [1656]. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'Serenissimo Prencipe / Han voluto questi Eccellentissimi miei Signori colleghi'. Other copies in Add. 8341 (art. 5, ff. 122-185), 8398 (art. 7, ff. 324-393v), and 8404 (with slightly different text). Published by Barozzi - Berchet, s. iii, v. ii (Venice, 1878), pp. 163-192.

'Ragioni del Prefetto di Roma per la precedenza sopra gli Ambasciatori', petition to Pope Innocent X (?), possibly from Prince Taddeo Barberini, asking confirmation of the right of precedence of the Prefect of Rome over foreign ambassadors at the papal court; after 1644. Italian. Copy. Inc. (f. 98) 'Beatissimo Padre / Il Prefetto di Roma investito solennemente'.
Paper; ff. 112+xx, plus three unfoliated blanks after f. 96. Old foliation in ink '1-111' (ff. 2-112). 256 x 180mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. Two Italian hands. Late 17th-cent. Italian binding of full vellum.
