MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTION of letters and political tracts relating to France, Rome, Germany, Bohemia, and Naples; circa 1619-1660. Italian. One draft (art. 1) and copies. The MS. includes: - (a) letters and treatise (arts. 1-3) relating to Jean François Paul de Gondi, Cardinal de Retz, and his opposition to Cardinal Giulio Mazarin, Prime Minister of Louis XIV of France, 1653-1660; - (b) manifesto (art. 4) of Prince Frederick Elector Palatine of the Rhine issued after his coronation as King of Bohemia, 1619; - (c) terms of agreement (art. 5) between the representatives of the Emperor Ferdinand II and Queen Christina of Sweden for the capitulation of Augsburg, 1635; - (d) privileges (art. 6) granted to the town of Naples by Rodrigo Ponce de Leon, Duke of Arcos, Viceroy of Naples, on behalf of Philip IV of Spain. Pen drawing in ink in the upper part of f. 91, representing the Virgin and Child, flanked by the coats-of-arms of King Philip III (i.e. Philip IV of Spain; left) and of the town of Naples (right). Table of contents (f. 1), added later. Old signatures in pencil 'Tom. XCVIII' in upper right corner of f. i, and '5[42]' in ink in fifth spine compartment: identifiable with Mattei MS. 542 (vol. 98 of 'Materie diverse') in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 24. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '106' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8317-8331, 8346, and 8347, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 106 (part).

'Lettera scritta dal signor Cardinale di Retz calunniato e carcerato per ordine del Re in Parigi, a tutti gli Arcivescovi e Vescovi della Francia ... venire a' piedi d'Innocentio X, suo Principe, tradotta dal francese in Italiano', letter from Jean François Paul de Gondi, Cardinal de Retz, to the archbishops and bishops of France; [1660]. Italian translation. Draft. Inc. 'Signori / Io mi reputerei indegno'. Another copy in Add. 15470, ff. 17-35v.
2. ff. 28-32. 'Lettera del Re di Francia, che doveva presentare il Signor di Lione alla Beata Memoria di Innocentio X tradotta dal francese in italiano', undelivered letter from Louis XIV of France to be consigned by the French ambassador (later Secretary of state for foreign affairs) Hugues de Lionne to the late Pope Innocent X, who died on 7 Jan 1655, relating to Cardinal de Retz; 1655. Italian translation. Copy. Inc. 'Padre Santo / Li delitti del Cardinale di Retz sono troppo publici'.
3. ff. 33-45v, 46-69v. 'Scrittura sopra la liberatione del Cardinale di Retz' [titles added later, the second time (f. 46) attributing the text to Gondi], treatise relating to the liberation of Cardinal de Retz; circa 1653. Italian. Two copies. Inc. 'Giovedì sera delli quattordici di agosto 1653 fu chiamato dalla maestà del Re Christianissimo Monsignor Nuntio di Bagno'.
4. ff. 70-81. 'Manifesto di noi Federico Dio gratia Re di Boemia, Palatino del Reno Elettore', manifesto of Prince Frederick Elector Palatine of the Rhine elected King of Bohemia, here incorrectly dated 1659; [1619]. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'Per quale cagione habbiamo presa sopra di noi la Corona di Boemia', expl. 'Dato nel nostro Regio Castello di Praga li sette di novembre 1659 [sic] / Fredericus'.
5. ff. 82-90v.
