CV' in pencil in upper right corner of f. 1: identifiable with Mattei MS. 549 (vol. 105 of 'Materie diverse') in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 24v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '107' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8333, 8334, 8336, 8337, 8342, 8345, 8348, 8349, 8350, 8351, 8352, 8360, and 8812, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 107 (part).
Contents as follows:
1. ff. 2-33v. 'La Verità vagante'; circa 1661. Italian. Copy. Inc. (f. 3) 'Doppo che venne gittata in un pozzo'. Mentions (f. 9) the substitution of Alvise Molin by Giovanni Sagredo as Venetian ambassador to Wien in 1661.
2. ff. 34-89. 'Corsi di penna'; 1662. Italian. Copy. Inc. (f. 35) 'Corsi di penna sopra lo stato presente d'Europa su' 'l fine dell'anno 1661 e principio dell'anno 1662 / Parte prima / Interlocutori / Conte di Fuinermonte e Marchese di Sansorlino / Conte. E che ci è di nuovo'. Text divided into four parts: old foliation '1-46' covering the first three parts (ff. 34-79v) and continuing '49-52' in the blanks after f. 89; fourth part (ff. 80-89) copied by a later hand.
3. ff. 90-137v. 'Il bilancio de Prencipi / 1662' [repeated on f. 91]; 1662. Italian. Copy. Inc. (f. 91) 'Furono infinite le divine minacce'.
4. ff. 138-193v. 'Le Ombre apparenti' [repeated on f. 139]; n.d. Italian. Copy. Inc. (f. 139) 'Le Ombre apparenti / Ombra Prima / Le Ombre sovente apparenti'. Text divided into five parts.
Paper; ff. 193+i, plus two unfoliated blanks after ff. 33, 137, and four after f. 89. Four sets of old foliations in ink '1-32' (ff. 2-33), '1-46' and '49-52' (ff. 34-79, and four blanks following f. 89), '1-50' (ff. 90-137 and following two blanks), '1-56' (ff. 138-193). Arts. marked 'A-D' in black ink in upper right corner of title-page (ff. 2, 34, 90, 138). 281 x 200mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. At least two Italian hands. Late 17th-cent. Italian binding of full vellum; leaf fore-edges trimmed by the binder.
