INSTRUCTIONS to papal nuncios and other papal officers appointed to Spain, Flanders and Germany during the papacy of Gregory XV (1621-1623), with political and satirical texts, partly relating to Naples; 1621-1772. Italian and Latin. Partly copies. Items relating to Naples include two treatises (art. 6) concerning ecclesiastical benefices granted to the citizens of Naples in 1708, and satirical epitaphs (art. 9) relating to the famine in Naples in 1764 during the reign of King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon (1759-1806). 'xxxv' in gray ink in left upper corner of f. 1. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '392' in upper right corner of f. 1. Purchased, together with Add. 8356, 8376, 8406, 8475, 8481, 8535, 8675, 8702, 8732, 8763, and 8777, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 392 (part).
Paper; ff. 89+i, plus one unfoliated blank after ff. 33, 63, 77, 80, 83, and three after f. 72. Modern foliation in pencil '1-90' (followed here), omitting no. 34. Composite volume. 275 x 200mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. Several Italian hands: same hand for arts. 1-4 (ff. 1-63) and 7 (ff. 78-80v). Arts. marked '1-11' in upper left corner of first page. Guilford binding of quarter vellum with decorated paper covers over pasteboards.
