MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTION of relazioni, treatises and other historical papers relating to Rome and its territories, Venice, Spain, France, Savoy, Geneva and Colombia; circa 1558-1724. Italian and Latin. Copies and drafts. The volume was possibly compiled around 1722 during the papacy of Innocent XIII (1721-1724). With several contemporary corrections and additions throughout. Old shelfmark in ink 'XLIX' in lower spine: possibly identifiable with Marefoschi MS. 49 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 24v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '336' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8354, 8400, 8405, 8484 and 8591, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 336 (part).
Paper; ff. 373+v, plus one unfoliated blank after ff. 50, 71, 200, 275, 306, 311. Composite volume. 266 x 200mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. Several Italian hands. 18th-cent. Italian binding of full vellum.

1. ff. 1-31v. 'Manoscritto in cui si descrivono tutti i modi con i quali è stata governata Roma di tempo in tempo cominciando dal principio della sua fondazione fatta da Romolo sino a giorni presenti del pontefice Innocenzo XIII attualmente regnante', historical account of Rome and its successive governments throughout the centuries; 1721-1724. Italian. Draft. Inc. 'Romolo di Roma fondatore e padre assunse per se il governo'.
2. ff. 32-50v. 'Discorso intorno alle ragioni che la Chiesa ha sopra le terre della Romagna e sopra molte altre, le quali ha in varii tempi possedute, o vero ora possiede ... e che contenzioni siano state tra li pontefici e gli imperatori', political treatise relating to Church rights over territories in Romagna and elsewhere and the controversy with the Emperor; n.d. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'Parlando di Papa Alessandro 6o / In particolare oltre a questo'.
3. ff. 51-71v. 'Relazione dell'Eccellentissimo Signor Bernardo Navagero Ambasciatore Veneto fatta al Senato di Venezia del governo e ponteficato di Paolo IV...', relazione of Rome during the papacy of Paul IV by Bernardo Navagero; [1558]. Italian. Copy, late 17th cent. Inc. 'Roma, Serenissimo Prencipe, si come già crebbe colle armi'. Title written on a paper slip pasted on top of original title. Other copies in Add. 8355 (art. 8, ff. 183-205v), 10154, 29444 (ff. 90-121v), 48121 (Yelverton MS. 136; art. 9, ff. 117-177v). Published by Albèri, s. ii, vol. 3 (Florence, 1846), pp. 365-416 (the present text beginning at p. 373).
4. ff. 72-121. 'Scrittura in cui si vede secondo le leggi civili e canoniche se possino le Corone [di Spagna e di Francia] dare l'esclusiva dal Papato per mezzo de' loro ambasciatori a cardinali nel Conclave', originally followed by 'Il Signor Cardinal Albici [d. 1684] soggetto dottissimo ha composta la presente scrittura', crossed out and substituted by 'Composta da un teologo e canonista bravissimo d'ordine della Santità di Nostro Signore Papa Innocenzo XII [or XIII ?]; n.d. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'In questa materia è forza valersi dell'invenzione propria'. With numerous contemporary corrections.

'Relatione fatta al Senato di Venetia del Governo e Ponteficato di Alesandro VII dall'Eccellentissimo Sagredo quando terminata la sua Ambasciaria in Roma si portò alla Venetia', relazione of Rome written by Giovanni Pesaro together with Bertuccio Valier, Alvise Contarini and Nicolò Sagredo upon their return as ambassadors extraordinary sent to congratulate Alexander VII on his election in 1655; [1656]. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'Hanno voluto questi miei Signori Colleghi darmi l'honore della prelatione'. 'Relazione della fuga delli Signori Duchi e Duchessa di Lorena per la detenzione d'ambedoi i sudetti soggetti ordinata dal Re di Francia Ludovico XIIII con quello di più che avvenne nella fuga', with later addition 'sudetta e del ritorno de i dependenti de i sudetti Duchi a i loro stati con tutti li avvenimenti successi nel loro ristabilimento', relazione of the flight of Duke Charles IV of Lorraine and his wife from Nancy; circa 1633. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'Trovandosi il Cardinale di Richileù [sic] ormai padrone del Ducato di Lorena'.

Italian. Two drafts (?). Inc. 'Illustrissimo ... / Mi riconosco oggi onorato con una lettera'. With numerous corrections and additions (in particular to the first draft, ff. 217-232v).

'Investitura del Regno di Napoli data dalla Santità di Papa Innocenzio XIII all'Imperator Carlo Sesto con diversi patti e condizioni particolari che sono state solite di porsi nell'altre investiture date da papi antecessori al Re di Spagna pro tempore di Casa d'Austria', bulla of Innocent XIII endowing the Kingdom of Naples on the Emperor Charles VI; 1722. Imperfect (breaking in the midst of chapter IX). Inc. (f. 299) 'Prefazione / Ha la città di Ginevra dopo l'Appostasia della vera Religione'. The text is preceded (ff. 298-299) by a detailed table of contents. Other copies of Carduino's relazione in Add.
