MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTION of relazioni and political treatises relating to Rome, France, Spain, and Portugal; circa 1631-1667. Italian and Latin. Copies. The MS. includes: - (a) satirical tract (art. 1) against Alexander VII; - (b) relazioni and political treatises (arts. 2-6, 10-11) relating to the dispute between France and the Papacy that arose after the attack on the French Ambassador at Rome, Charles de Blanchefort, Duc de Créqui, by the papal Corsican Guards on 20 Aug. 1662; - (c) speeches (arts. 7-9) by Carlo Bonelli, papal nuncio at Madrid, and Estevan de Gamarra relating to the contrasts between the Papacy and Portugal, the involvement of Spain and a possible league against France; - (d) political and satirical tracts (arts. 12-13) relating to France, which include (ff. 220-220v) two satirical sonnets in Italian. Table of contents (f. 1), added later. Old signature in pencil 'Tom. CII' in upper right corner of f. i: identifiable with Mattei MS. 546 (vol. 102 of 'Materie diverse') in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 24. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '107' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8333, 8334, 8335, 8336, 8337, 8342, 8348, 8349, 8350, 8351, 8352, 8360, and 8812, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 107 (part).
