MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTION of historical papers relating to Rome and Portugal; 1640-1669. Italian. Copies. The papers relate to the refusal of the Apostolic See to recognise the legitimacy of the Portuguese Kings and the consequent refusal of the Popes to receive Portuguese ambassadors and approve the nomination of bishops in Portugal after the secession of the country from Spain. Table of contents (f. 1), added later. Old signature in pencil 'Tom. XCIX' in upper right corner of f. i: identifiable with Mattei MS. 543 (vol. 99 of 'Materie diverse') in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 24. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '106' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8317-8332, and 8347, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 106 (part).

'Discorso dell'Ambasciatore di Portogallo al Papa per essere ammesso come Ambasciatore Regio', memorial to Pope Alexander VII from Francisco de Sousa Coutinho, Ambassador of John IV of Portugal; [1656]. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'Beatissimo Patre / Prostrato a' Santissimi Piedi di Vostra Beatitudine e goduta la consolazione di baciarli'. Another copy in Add. 8712, arts. 12 and 17, ff. 154-184v, 199-219.
3. f. 127. Copy of edict issued by Francisco de Sousa Coutinho, Ambassador of Alphonso VI of Portugal, ordering all Portuguese people to return to Portugal; n.d. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'Don Francesco de Sosa Cotigno del Consiglio di Stato di Sua Maestà Alfonso VI Re di Portogallo Ambasciatore Straordinario nella Corte di Roma e Cavaliere di Cristo / D'ordine di Sua Maestà'. Signed by his secretary 'Gio. Venides Segretario'.
4. ff. 128-134v. 'Relatione della morte di Don Giovanni 4. Re di Portogallo seguita li 6 novembre 1656', relazione of the death of John IV of Portugal; circa 1656. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'S'ammalò Sua Maestà, che sia in gloria, alli 25 di ottobre'. Two relazioni of King's John's death in Portuguese in Add. 20931 (art. 3), and 20933 (art. 10). Copies of a letter relating to the king's death from the Portuguese Ambassador, Francisco Sousa Coutinho to Pope Alexander VII, dated 7 Jan. 1657, in Add. 16483, ff. 95 and 213.
