MISCELLANEOUS COLLECTION of relazioni and other historical papers relating to the Patriarchate of Aquileia; circa 1445-1629. Latin and Italian. Copies, 17th cent. The collection relates to the dispute between the Emperor Ferdinand II, the Republic of Venice and Pope Urban VIII over the appointment of the Patriarch of Aquileia after the death of Patriarch Agostino Gradenigo in 1629. In the end another Venetian prelate, Marco Gradenigo, was elected, against the wishes of Ferdinand II who wanted a German prelate to become the new Patriarch. Table of contents (f. 1), added later. Old signature in pencil 'Tom. CVII' in upper right corner of f. ii: identifiable with Mattei MS. 551 (vol. 107 of 'Materie diverse') in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 24v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '107' in pencil in upper left corner of f. i (i.e. front pastedown). Purchased, together with Add. 8333, 8334, 8335, 8336, 8337, 8342, 8345, 8348, 8350, 8351, 8352, 8360, and 8812, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 107 (part).
Paper; ff. 82+xviii, plus two unfoliated blanks after ff. 5, 15, 21, 38, 64, three after ff. 27, 49, and one after f. 63. Composite volume. Old foliation in ink '1-75' (ff. 2-82), omitting ff. 5, 15, 21, 27, 38, 64. 265 x 205mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. Several Italian hands. Mid 17th-cent. Italian binding of full vellum.
