Old shelfmark '5[52]' almost cancelled in fourth spine compartment; signature in pencil 'Tom. CVIII' in upper right corner of f. i: identifiable with Mattei MS. 552 (vol. 108 of 'Materie diverse') in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 24v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '107' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8333, 8334, 8335, 8336, 8337, 8342, 8345, 8348, 8349, 8351, 8352, 8360, and 8812, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 107 (part).

1. ff. 2-53. 'Discorso politico della Germania e delle pretensioni del Re di Francia all'Imperio', political tract relating to French claims over German territories; n.d. Italian. Copy. Inc. (f. 3) 'Essendo comandato da Vostra Serenità di scrivere li miei pensieri'. Mentioning the year 1660 (f. 20v).

2. ff. 54-116. 'Il veridico Statista, tanto delle cose civili quanto militari', political instructions to secretaries; n.d. Italian. Copy. Inc. (f. 55) 'Se il potere e sapere mio fossero uguali'. Another copy in Add. 8359, ff. 2-49.

Paper; ff. 116+i, plus two unfoliated blanks after f. 53. Old foliation in ink '1-114' (ff. 2-116), repeating no. 70. 251 x 175mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. Two Italian hands. Late 17th-cent. Italian binding of full vellum.
