Letters relating to the Court of Rome, Spain and France; 1443-1561. Italian and Latin. Copies. Collection of letters written by papal nuncios and envoys concerning peace negotiations conducted by Popes Paul III, Julius III, and Emperor Charles V, and Francis I and Henry II of France. Authors of the letters are Niccolò Ardinghelli, Bishop of Fossombrone, Sebastiano Pighini, Archbishop of Siponto, Prospero Santacroce Pubbicola, Bishop of Chissamos, Carlo Borromeo, Archbishop of Milan, and Antonio Florebello Lavellino, Papal Secretary. The letters are followed (f. 116) by a list of contents. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. Purchased from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot unknown.

1. ff. 1-6v. Letter to Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, the Younger, from Niccolò Ardinghelli, Bishop of Fossombrone and Pope Paul III's envoy extraordinary, conc. Ardinghelli's mission to France to conduct peace negotiations with King Frances I; Melun, 1 Dec. 1541. Ital. Other copies of the letter are Add. 8391, ff. 186-202 and Arch. Vat. Principi 12, f. 307. A summary of the letter is in J. Lestocquoy, Correspondencedes Nonces en France, Capodiferro, Dandino et Guidiccione 1541-1546, pp. 99-102.
