GIULIO ANTONIO SANTORI: 'Diari concistoriali'; 1570-1576. Latin. Copy. Imperfect. Descriptions of the consistories of Pius V (1566-1572) and Gregory XIII (1572-1585), compiled by Cardinal Giulio Antonio Santori di Santa Severina (1532-1602), Archbishop of San Severino and Roman Grand Inquisitor. Sartori's accounts begin on 17 May 1570, the day on which he was created cardinal, and continue to 17 Dec. 1576. However, the text in the present MS. is incomplete and breaks off in the middle of the consistory of 21 Nov. 1575. Published by P. Tacchi Venturi S.I. as Diario Concistoriale di Giulio Antonio Santori Cardinale di S. Severina in Studi e documenti di storia e diritto. Pubblicazione periodica dell'Accademia di Conferenze Storico-Giuridiche, vols. xxiii (1902), pp. 297-347, xxiv (1903), pp. 73-142, 205-272, xxv (1904), pp. 89-135; see also G. Papa, 'A proposito dei diari consistoriali del cardinal Santoro', Rivista di Storia della Chiesa in Italia, vol. 8 (1954), pp. 267-277, listing other MS. copies. A MS. copy of the autobiography of Cardinal Santori in Add. 20051; published by G. Cugnoni as [Vita del Card. Title (f. 1) 'Consistoria Annorum 1570 / 1571 / 1572 / 1573 / 1574 / 1575 / 1576' [but lacking accounts relating to the year 1576], inc. (f. 2) 'Actorum Sacri Summi Pontificis & Amplissimi Cardinalium Senatus Diaria Adnotatio / Ad singularem rerum memoriam servandam ... ego Julius Antonius indignus Ecclesiae S. Severinae Archiepiscopus, ... mihi soli adnotare operae pretium existimavi', expl. (f. 184v) 'agendas esse per solemnem celebrationem sive dicatur'. Consistories of Pius V, 17 May 1570 - 6 Feb. 1572 (ff. 2-88v); consistories of Gregory XIII, 17 Oct. 1572 - 21 Nov. 1575 (ff. 89-184v). Old shelfmarks '377' and 'IV.A.23.' on two small paper cuttings pasted onto f. i, and '2.6.' and '300' on a paper slip pasted onto the verso of last blank leaf. Stamp (f. 1) 'biblioth / h.f. / J770', probably from the Biblioteca Falconieri (but not identifiable with any Falconieri MS. in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220). Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '88' in pencil in upper left corner of f. i; other nos. in pencil '4' and '27' on same leaf. Purchased, together with Add. 8410, 8411, 8414, 8415, 8426, 8427, and 8428, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 88 (part).
