GIAMPIETRO MAFFEI: Annals of Gregory XIII; 1572-1585. Italian. Copies. Annals of the papacy of Gregory XIII (1572-1585), written by the Jesuit historian Giampietro Maffei of Bergamo (1535-1603), and completed, revised and corrected after his death by Paolo Teggia (d. 1620). In the present MS. the text is divided into fourteen books. The text was originally bound in two separate volumes, the first volume (now ff. 1-305) containing books 1-8 (1572-1579), the second (now ff. 306-565) books 9-14 (1580-1585). Another two-volume copy in Add. 20026, 20027. Published posthumously by C. Cocquelines as Degli Annali di Gregorio XIII (Rome: Girolamo Mainardi, 1742), 2 vols.; B.L. copy 206.d.9. Paper; ff. 567, plus four unfoliated blanks after f. 305. Modern foliation in pencil from f. 306, '306-565' (followed here), repeating nos. 413-414. Two sets of old foliation: '1-305' (ff. 1-305), '1-262' (ff. 306-565). 266 x 197mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. One Italian hand. Guilford binding of quarter vellum with decorated paper covers over pasteboards; edges mottled in red and light green.
