BAGLIONI LETTER-BOOK: Registers of dispatches to and from Malatesta Baglioni, Bishop of Pesaro, as papal nuncio to the Emperor Ferdinand II (8 Sept. 1634 - 8 Aug. 1639); 1634-1637. Italian. Copies. The register contains mostly copies of dispatches that were originally sent in cipher to Baglioni by other papal nuncios. The dispatches are divided chronologically into six books; the last seventh book (ff. 125v-129) contains a few dispatches from Baglioni to other nuncios, dated 27 Dec. 1634 - 16 Jan. 1635. Correspondents include Cardinal Nepote Francesco Barberini, Secretary of State of Pope Urban VIII, Cardinal Marzio Ginetti, peace legate at Cologne (June 1636 - Oct. 1640), Giulio Mazarin in Paris, and the papal nuncios Francesco Vitelli in Venice, Lorenzo Campeggi in Madrid, Giorgio Bolognetti in Paris, Onorato Visconti in Poland, Martino Alfieri in Cologne, and Ranuccio Scotti in Switzerland. Including copies of: - (a) ff. 39v-40, letter to Lorenzo Campeggi from Gaspar de Guzmán, Count-Duke of Olivares, prime minister of Philip IV of Spain, 24 May 1635, in Spanish; - (b) ff. 55v-56v, letter from Giovanni Antonio Paravicini, Archpriest of Sondrio, to Ranuccio Scotti, 20 August 1635. Becker. Title (f. 1) 'Registro delle Cifre che si ricevono dalli Nuntii Apostolici / Libro I'. Inc. (f. 2) 'Di Venetiali 9 dicembre 1634 / Di Monsignor Vitelli Nuncio / Ricevuto e decifrato li 19 detto', expl. (f. 129) 'Di Naistot 16 gennaio 1635 / A Monsignor Mazzarini Nuntio ... di questo novo motivo per il buon servizio di Nostro Signore / Finis'. The seven books are introduced by decorated title-pages (ff. 1, 37, 50, 73, 100, 119, 125v). Most dispatches have appended details of their delivery and decipherment. Their chronological division in the books is as follows: 9 Dec. 1634 - 19 May 1635, 31 May - 20 Nov. 1635, 16 July - 26 Dec. 1635, 12 Jan. - 21 July 1636, 12 Aug. - 8 Dec. 1636, 2 Jan. - 29 Jan. 1637, 27 Dec. 1634 - 16 Jan. 1635. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '390' in pencil in upper margin of front pastedown. Purchased, together with 8370, 8541, 8699, 8731, 8733, 8765, 8770, 8771, 8773, 8774, and possibly 8776, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 390 (part).
