PAPERS relating to the dispute between Urban VIII and Odoardo Farnese; 1641-1645. Italian and Latin. Papers relating to the dispute between Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644) and the Duke Odoardo Farnese (1622-1646) over territories in the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza. The dispute was the cause of the so-called War of Castro between the Papacy and the League formed by Odoardo Farnese, Duke Ferdinand II of Tuscany, Duke Francis I of Modena, and the Republic of Venice. Many of the collected papers relate to the involvement in the dispute of the Republic of Genoa and of the Genoese Cardinal Ottaviano Raggi, together with his nephews Stefano and Lorenzo (later Cardinal) Raggi. The MS. includes: - (a) ff. 1-31, 34-42, 47-54v, proceedings of the Auditors of the Apostolic Chamber, Cardinals Ottaviano Raggi and Mario Theodoli, against the Duke of Parma, 21 Aug. 1641 - 13 Jan. 1642, in Latin; - (b) ff. 32-33v, Capitoli in the document of the capitulation of Castro, 12 Oct. 1641, in Italian; - (c) ff. 43-46v, 67, two briefs of Urban VIII, respectively dated 9 Nov. 1641 and 6 June 1643, in Latin; - (d) ff. 55-57v, letters from Duke Odoardo Farnese to Cardinal Stefano Durazzo, papal legate at Bologna (followed by the Cardinal's reply on f. 55v), to the governors of Perugia and Orvieto (followed by Orvieto's reply on f. 57v), and to the Republic of Genoa, Sept. 1642, in Italian; - (e) f. 58, letter from the League confederates to Cardinal Bernardino Spada, n.d., in Italian; - (f) ff. 58v-60v, letter from Stefano Raggi to Cardinal Raggi, 22 Feb. 1643, in Italian; - (g) f. 61, letter from Cardinal Raggi to Agostino Pallavicini of Genoa, 26 Feb. 1643, in Italian; - (h) ff. 63-64, message from the Republic of Venice to its ambassadors relating to the League, 19 May 1643, in Italian; - (i) ff. 64v-65v, 68-69, letter from Duke Francis I of Modena, to Giovanni Battista Grimaldi of Genoa, and reply from the Barberini family, June 1643, in Italian; - (j) ff. 66-66v, account of the Protest read in consistory to Urban VIII by Cardinal Gaspare Borgia on behalf of Philip IV of Spain, n.d., in Latin and Italian; - (k) f. 67v, letter to Urban VIII from Cardinal Raggi, 21 July 1643, in Italian; - (l) ff. 70-74v, messages from Urban VIII and Innocent X to Lorenzo Raggi, General Treasurer, July 1643 - 27 July 1645, in Italian. Mid 17th-cent. gilt-tooled Italian binding of full vellum, restored for Guilford; title (?) in ink on lower edge, unreadable.
