MISCELLANEOUS PAPERS relating to the Duchies of Parma and Piacenza during the Papacy of Clement XII, and to the promotion of Vincenzo Bichi to the Cardinalate at the instance of the Portuguese court; 1717-1732. Italian. Partly printed. The MS. includes a miscellaneous collection of papers relating to Vincenzo Bichi and the controversy between the Holy See and state powers on the right of selecting nuncios representing the Holy See in foreign states. Vincenzo Bichi was nuncio in Portugal and his election as cardinal was a source of controversy between the King of Portugal, John V, the Holy See and factions on both sides. The MS. also includes papers relating to the succession to the Duchies of Parma and Piacenza and the return of such Duchies to the Holy See if without issue. Table of contents (ff. 1-1v) added later. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. Purchased from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot unknown.
