LIVES OF THE CARDINALS of Innocent X; 1650. Italian. The work comprises short lifes of the seventy-three cardinals of the Sacred College in 1650, the year of the Jubilee, beginning (ff. 13-16v) with Camillo Pamphili, Cardinal-Nepote of Innocent X and later Prince, and ending (ff. 481v-483v) with Marcello Lanti. The text is a revised and enlarged version of another MS. work entitled La Stadiera de Prencipi Porporati. The work is dedicated (ff. 6-7) to an Italian prince, who had commissioned the revision to the anonymous author. In the final address to the prince (ff. 483v-484) the author claims to have met all the mentioned Cardinals in Rome, where he lived for ten years, and to have made substantial additions to the previous work which had been compiled three years earlier (1647) by another unnamed author. A copy of the earlier text in Add. 8371, art. 1, ff. 2-116; the text was published as La giusta statera de' porporati dove s'intende la vita, la nascita ... di ciascun Cardinale hoggi vivente ... con l'aggionta delli penultimi sei Cardinali, promossi da Innocentio X l'anno 1648 (Geneva [but Amsterdam: Nicolas Van Rivesteyn], 1650): see B.L. copies 853.a.14.(1) and 1372.a.5.(1). In the past the work has been erroneously attributed to G. Leti: see F. Barcia, Bibliografia delle opere di Gregorio Leti (Milan, 1981), no. lxix, pp. 544-545. The present MS. also includes (ff. 311-326) a detailed account of men and women of the Orsini family, added to the life of Cardinal Virginio Orsini (ff. 306v-326). The MS. is listed in Palma di Cesnola, no. 1544, p. 122. Title (f. 1) 'La Stadiera Maggiore de' Principi Porporati / overo / Vite di tutti i Cardinali viventi nell'anno presente del Giubileo / MDCL / All'Altezza Serenissima del N..'.
