Allocutions (i.e. addresses) given to the College of Cardinals by Pope Pius VII (1800-1823) during the Consistories of 16 March and 11 July 1808, relating to the interference of Napoleon I (1804-1814) in religious and ecclesiastical matters. Title (f. 1) 'Sanctissimi Domini Nostri Pii Divina Providentia Papae VII Allocutiones ad Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Cardinales habitae die XVI Martii et die XI Julii 1808'. Inc. (f. 2) 'Sanctissimi Domini ... in Consistorio Segreto die XI Julii 1808 / Venerabiles Fratres / Maxisse [?] demum, Venerabiles Fratres, miserum illum vidimus diem'; inc. (f. 13) 'Sanctissimi Domini ... in Congregatione Consistoriali die XVI Martii 1808 / Venerabiles Fratres / Nova vulnera, Venerabiles Fratres, semperque graviora'. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '96' in pencil in upper margin of f. 1. Purchased, together with Add. 8339, 8384, 8387, 8388, 8390, and possibly 8389, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 96 (part).
Paper; ff. 21+iv. 266 x 198mm. One Italian hand. Guilford binding of quarter vellum with decorated paper covers over pasteboards.
