ACCOUNT of the arrest and deportation of Pope Pius VII and Cardinal Bartolomeo Pacca, followed by a travel-iournal of Giovanni Fiorani; circa 1814. Italian. Copies. Art. 1 (ff. 1-31) describes the assault on the Quirinal Palace by the French troops in 1809, the arrest and deportation to Grenoble of Pius VII (1800-1823) and Cardinal Bartolomeo Pacca; art. 2 (ff. 32-57v) is the travel-journal written by Giovanni Fiorani, envoy of the Republic of Genoa to Pius VII in France in 1814. Contemporary table of contents (f. i). Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '96' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8339, 8384, 8385, 8388, 8390, and possibly 8389, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 96 (part).

1. ff. 1-31. 'Assalto del Palazzo Quirinale e Rapimento di Pio VII'; n.d. Inc. (f. 2) 'Relazione dell'Assalto dato li 6 luglio 1809 al Palazzo Quirinale e del Rapimento del Sovrano Pontefice Papa Pio VII / Dopo l'invasione degli Stati che restavano ancora alla Chiesa', expl. (f. 31) 'trattenuta colà nell'ospizio de' Monaci Benedittini'. The text is divided into 3 chapters; second and third chapters respectively entitled (f. 12) 'Viaggio di Sua Santità e di Sua Eminenza il Cardinal Pacca fino alla Certosa di Firenze', and (f. 24v) 'Viaggio e permanenza di Sua Santità e dell'Eminentissimo Cardinal Pacca a Grenoble'. With occasional footnotes and corrections. A similar text in Add. 8339, ff. 6-32.
2. ff. 32-57v. 'Itinerario di Giovanni Fiorani in occasione delle prime mosse del Santo Padre per ordine di Napoleone. Viaggio eseguito dal suddetto Fiorani per ordine dell'Eminentissimo Signore Cardinal Antonio Doria Panphili essendo al servizio dell'Eccelentissima Casa Doria in Genova 1814'; 1814. Inc. (f. 33) 'Riviera di Genova destinata al visibile Trionfo della Religione ... (f. 34) Il primo Romano che ebbe la sorte in Italia', expl. (f. 57v) 'mi condussi a Genova'.

Two Italian hands: - (a) ff. 2-31, same hand as in Add. 8339 (main hand), 8384, 8388, 8389 (ff. 2-20, 51-60, 64-67v), and 8390: possibly Louis Cereghelli (see Add. 8389); - (b) ff. 32-57v.
