NAVAGERO LETTER-BOOK; 1555-1556. Italian. Copy. Register of dispatches to the Doges of Venice Francesco Venier (1554- 2 June 1556) and Lorenzo Priuli (14 June 1556-1559) from Monsignor Bernardo Navagero (Cardinal in 1561). The dispatches were sent by Navagero in his first year as Venetian Ambassador to the newly elected Pope Paul IV (1555-1559), and date 7 Sept. 1555 - 4 Sept. 1556. The first two dispatches are also signed by Girolamo Grimani and Matteo Dandolo, who had been sent together with Francesco Contarini and Carlo Morosini as Ambassadors Extraordinary of the Republic to the new Pope. The dispatches sent between the death of Doge Venier and the election of Doge Priuli (13 June – 24 June) are addressed to the Venetian Senate. Another copy of dispatches in Sloane 896. The present MS. is listed in Iter Italicum, IV (1989), p. 68a. Copies of Navagero's relazione of Rome in Add. 10154, 29444 (ff. 90-121v), 48121 (Yelverton MS. 136; art. 9, ff. 117-177v). Title (f. 1) 'Primo Registro dell'Ambasciata di Roma di Monsignor Bernardo Navager Ambasciatore Ordinario a Papa Pavolo Quarto Caraffa ... cominciando l'anno 1555. 7 settembre'. Inc. 'Serenissimo Prencipe / Hieri arrivassimo in questa Città verso la sera', expl. (f. 422v) 'delle difficoltà e impedimenti. Gratia etc. Di Roma li 4 settembre 1556 / Bernardo Navagero Ambasciatore / Il fine del primo registro che contiene il negoziato di un anno intero'. With sparse marginal notations. Old shelfmark in brown ink (fainted) '.6.' in fifth spine compartment: possibly identifiable with Mattei MS. 362 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 20. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '336' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8341, 8354, 8405, 8484 and 8591, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 336 (part).
