RANIERI ZEN: Relazione of Rome; [1623]. Italian. Copy. Ranieri Zen was the Venetian ambassador at Rome from 1621 to 1623 during the papacy of Popes Gregory XV (1621-1623) and Urban VIII (1623-1643). Other copies in Add. 8398 (art. 4, ff. 135-246), 10155 and 10155*, 16519 (ff. 199-255), 17359 (ff. 95-197), 30670 (art. 2, ff. 132-200), 48121 (Yelverton MS. 136; art. 11, ff. 251-356v). Published by Barozzi - Berchet, s. iii, v. i (Venice, 1877), pp. 137-193. Title (f. 1) 'Relatione di Roma fatta nel Senato Veneto dall'Illustrissimo Signor Raniero Zeni Ambasciatore di quella Repubblica appresso Sua Santità'. Inc. 'Serenissimo Prencipe / La morte di Gregorio XV seguita nell'ultimi anni della mia Ambasciaria di Roma', expl. (f. 112) 'havesse sparso il sangue et la vita / Finis'. Marked 'Tomo 41' in upper margin of f. 1. Old shelfmark in brown ink '124' in lower spine: identifiable with Mattei MS. 124 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 30v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '334' in pencil in upper margin of f. i. Purchased, together with Add. 8403, 8550, 8571, 8594, 8686, 8701, 8805, and 8806, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 334 (part).
