ALVISE DI NICOLÒ CONTARINI: Relazione of Rome, followed by anonymous political tract; 1648. Italian. Copy. Art. 1 (ff. ii, 1-25) is the relazione of Rome written by Alvise di Nicolò Contarini, Venetian ambassador at Rome from 1645 to 1648 during the papacy of Pope Innocent X (1644-1655). Other copies in Add. 8398 (art. 5, ff. 247-272), 8406 (art. 2, ff. 111-140), and 16518 (ff. 46-61). Text differs at the end from the relazione published by Barozzi - Berchet, s. iii, v. ii (Venice, 1878), pp. 63-82. Art. 2 (ff. 26-50v) is a political tract relating to the conduct of the clergy at the Papal Court. In other copies the tract is attributed to an unidentified Count of Verua: cf. Add. 48134 (Yelverton MS. 149, art. 1, ff. 24-45), Royal 14.A.xviii (art. 8, ff. 196-215), and Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, Ital. suppl. 725, item ii (Marsand, i, 1835, p. 608). Stamp of the Colonna library 'Libraria Colonna' in red on ff. ii and iii verso; for the Colonna library stamp see Bragaglia, vol. iii, T 32: c. 1750. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '334' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8402, 8550, 8571, 8594, 8686, 8701, 8805, and 8806, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 334 (part).

1. ff. ii, 1-25. 'Relatione della Corte di Roma nell'anno 1648 descritta dal Cavaliere Contarini Ambasciatore della Repubblica di Venezia' (title repeated on ff. i and 1); 1648. Inc. (f. 2) 'La Città di Roma è soggetta di ricevere varii aspetti', expl. 'ch'Ella maestosamente sostiene'.
2. ff. 26-50v. 'Avvertimenti politici da osservarsi da chi vuol servire in Corte' (title repeated on ff. 26 and 27); n.d. Inc. (f. 28) 'Nell'eleggere un Padrone, credi, che tutti l'estremi sono vitiosi', expl. 'che secondo la diversità loro si trova merito per tutti'.
