RELAZIONI of Rome; 1648-1654. Italian. Copies. The MS. contains the relazioni of Rome during the papacy of Innocent X (1644-1655). The authors are the Venetian ambassadors Giovanni Giustinian (art. 1, ff. 2-110), and Alvise di Nicolò Contarini (art. 2, ff. 111-140), and the French ambassador Henri d'Estampes, Bailli de Valençay (art. 3, ff. 141-165v). The MS. also includes (art. 4, ff. 166-205v) a letter from Cardinal Pier Donato Cesi to the Prime Minister of Spain Don Luis Mendez de Haro y Zúñiga, Marqués of Carpio, written in reply to the relazione published by d'Estampes. Table of contents (f. 1), added later. Old shelfmark in brown ink (slightly faint) '11[.]' in fifth spine compartment: possibly identifiable with Mattei MS. 119 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 30v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '392' in top left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8340, 8356, 8376, 8475, 8481, 8535, 8675, 8702, 8732, 8763, and 8777, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 392 (part).
Paper; ff. 205+xxi, plus one unfoliated blank after ff. 48, 87, three after ff. 110, 165, four after f. 140. Composite volume: arts. 1-3 marked 'Tomo 115, 119, 115' in black ink in upper left corner of first leaves. Old foliation '1-203' (ff. 2-205), repeating no. 172. 257 x 182mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. Three Italian hands: same hand for arts. 1-2 (ff. 2-140). Late 17th-cent. Italian binding of full vellum.
