MISCELLANY relating to Rome and Roman families, and including a short history of the Mattei Family by Onofrio Panvinio; 17th cent. Latin and Italian. Copies. The history of the Mattei family (art. 1) was written in 1561 by the Veronese historian and archeologist Onofrio Panvinio (1530-1568); another copy of the text in Padua, Biblioteca Universitaria, MS. 263, is listed in Iter Italicum, vol. ii (London, 1967), p. 13. The MS. also includes: an anonymous history of the Colonna family (art. 2), a list of Roman Senators from 1220 to 1662 (art. 3), a tract by the Roman historian Francesco Valesio (1670 - circa 1730) on a medieval tower in Rome, called Tor de' Conti (art. 5), the will of Matteo Rosso [i.e. Orsini?], father of Cardinal Giovanni Caetani Orsini, later Pope Nicholas III (art. 6), a life of Pope Urban IV (1261-1264) offered to his nephew Cardinal Anchero Pantaléon by the contemporary French historian and poet Thierry de Vaucouleurs, in Latin verses (art. 7), and an anonymous account of the entry of the Emperor Charles V into Rome in 1536 (art. 9). Table of contents (f. 1), added later. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. Purchased from R. H. Evans, 8 December. 1830, lot unknown.
Paper; ff. 206+i, plus one unfoliated blank after ff. 59, 138, 188, two after f. 180. Old foliation in ink '1-211' (ff. 2-206), including blanks, possibly missing leaf foliated '60'. Composite volume. 293 x 210mm (mounted on modern guards). Several Italian hands.
