ANONYMOUS COLLECTION OF LIVES of eminent people and Italian heretics condemned by the Inquisition in Rome; late 17th - early 18th cent. Italian. Copy. The texts provide detailed accounts of the lives, trials and executions of : - (a) art. 1, ff. 3-21, Cardinal Carlo Carafa (1517-1561), his brother Giovanni, Duke of Paliano, the Count of Alife, brother-in-law of Giovanni, and Leonardo di Cardine, Alife's uncle; for other accounts of the Carafas' execution see Add. 8391 (arts. 6-9, ff. 208-236), and 8397 (art. 12, ff. 87-93; for Cardinal Carlo Carafa and his brother Giovanni Carafa, Duke of Paliano, see DBI, 19 (1976), pp. 497-509, 556-559; - (b) art. 2, ff. 22-34, the Roman brothers Nicola and Bernardino Missori; - (c) art. 3, ff. 35-49v, Francesco Cenci (d. 1598) and his family; - (d) art. 4, ff. 50-55, the sons of Marquis Massimi; - (e) art. 5, ff. 55-93, the heretical Archbishop of Spalato and Venetian agent Marcantonio de Dominis (1566-1624); - (f) art. 6, ff. 94-104v, Giacinto Centini, nephew of Cardinal Felice Centini; - (g) art. 7, ff. 105-138, the Auditor of the Contraddette and forger Francesco Canonici (1609-1652), called Mascambruno; - (h) art. 8, ff. 139-154, the Milanese doctor and alchemist Francesco Giuseppe Borri (1627-1695). Another copy of the lives of the Missori brothers, Marcantonio de Dominis, Mascambruno, and Francesco Giuseppe Borri in Add. 8357. Other copies of the lives of the Massimi brothers in Add. 8408 (art. 15, ff. 138-145v), and of Mascambruno in Add. 8392 (art. 25, ff. 587-607v). The account of Borri's life differs from the work by Gregorio Leti (1630-1701), entitled Sommario del Processo di Gioseppe Francesco Borri Milanese condannato e sentetiato dal Tribunale del S. Officio per Eretico... published in L'ambasciata di Romolo a' Romani ... Con la Vita, Processo e Sentenza di Francesco Borri Milanese... (Bruxelles [but Geneva], 1671), pp. 689-720, B.L. copy 1492.d.3. The MS. also includes (art. 9, ff. 155-233v) the life of Olimpia Maldachini, sister-in-law of Pope Innocent X (1644-1655), written by an unidentified Abbot Gualdi. First published as Vita di Donna Olimpia Maldachini, che governò la Chiesa durante il Pontificato di Innocentio X. Dopo l'anno 1644, sino all'anno 1655. Scritta dall'Abate Gualdi (Cosmopoli [but Geneva]: Eugenio Migani, 1666); B.L. copy 1121.a.17. The life is here preceded by the dedicatory letter to nobildonne added by Gregorio Leti to the second edition in Italian of the life, Vita di Donna Olimpia Maldachini... Nuovamente ristampata, con un'aggiunta considerabile (Ragusa [but Geneva]: Giulio Giuli, 1667), B.L. copy 1112.a.11. Another copy of this life, without Leti's addition, in Add. 12040, a former Guilford MS. (see Guilford bookplate on f. i verso, with shelfmark 'L/21/C') acquired by the Museum with the collection of D. D. Samuel Butler, Bishop of Lichfield, in 1841. The MS. is entitled (f. 1) 'Avvenimenti tragici e esemplari di delitti seguiti e puniti in Roma in diversi personaggi ed accaduti in diversi tempi e sotto diversi governi e pontificati'. Preface (ff. 2-2v) 'Introduzzione all'Istoria / Benigno lettore / Non peraltra cagione l'Istoria è chiamata Maestra dell'humana vita'. Contemporary detailed table of contents (f. 234). Old shelfmarks in black ink 'F.VI.49' (in front pastedown) and '36' (in lower spine). Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '84' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8374, 8432, 8471, 8485, 8486, 8488, 8524, 8666, and 8690, from R. H. Evans, 8 December. 1830, lot 84 (part).

2. ff. 22-34. 'Vita e morte di Niccola e Bernardino Missori fratelli romani giustiziati in Roma loro Patria nel Pontificato di Papa Innocenzio XI / L'infelice e miserabile morte ... giustiziati in Roma ... per i lor misfatti e selleraggini il di 15 gennaro 1685'.
