TRACT on papal conclaves; early 17th cent. Italian. Copy. Treatise relating to the rules and proceedings of the conclaves for the election of the pope. The text is divided into 3 books (ff. 6, 67, 190), the third book including accounts of conclaves and subsequent papacies from Innocent VIII (1481-1492) to Clement VII (1523-1534). Title (f. 2) 'Discorsi del conclave / Volume primo'. Proemium (ff. 6-7v) 'Molti facilmente si troveranno li quali non prima havendo inteso il soggetto', inc. (f. 8v) 'Delle cose che s'hanno da trattare in questo discorso / Capitolo 2o', expl. (f. 351v) 'usar li cibi di sua natura sani e buoni'. Contemporary table of contents (ff. 3-5). Old shelfmark 'CCLXV / III' in ink on small paper slip pasted onto upper left corner of front pastedown; other shelfmark '256' in ink on small paper slip pasted onto lower left part of f. 1v. Ownership inscription (f. 1v) 'Ex libris / Marii Marefusci': identifiable with Marefoschi MS. 268 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 9v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '88' in pencil in front pastedown and upper left corner of f. 1. Purchased, together with Add. 8367, 8410, 8414, 8415, 8426, 8427, and 8428, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 88 (part).
Paper; ff. 355, plus two unfoliated blanks after f. 5. Old pagination in ink '1-350' (ff. 5-355). 267 x 197mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. One Italian hand. Guilford binding of quarter vellum with decorated paper covers over pasteboards.
