'Conclave fatto per la sede vacante di Papa Marcello Secondo nel quale fù assonto al Ponteficato il Cardinal di Chieti detto Paolo IIII', followed (f. 140) by the 'Capitoli sottoscritti da Cardinali nella sede vacante di Paolo Quarto per farli giurare, et osservare al Papa futuro', the text of the so-called pontifical capitulation (then customary but subsequently forbidden by Pius IV), which was prepared by the cardinals for the new Pope to sign as a condition of his election (in this case, after the death of Paul IV for his successor; see Pastor, History of the Popes, vol. 15, p. 16; the text of the capitulation is also printed in Conclavi, pp. 216-218); 1555. Italian and Latin. Copy. Inc. 'Il conclave di Paolo Quarto per esser stata così breve la vita', expl. 'ita me Deus adiuvet, et haec sacra Dei evangelia'. For other copies of this version see Add. A general political tract on the conclave (title given in contents list, f.1: 'Discursus politicus de conclavibus'; the contents list reference is to f. 143 (old foliation f. 149) which appears to be a form of title-page for this text: 'Per il P. di C. di M.C.'); 17th cent. The text discusses the composition of the conclave and the right of secular authorities to interfere with the choice of pope (the latter became an intensely debated issue in the early 17th cent.); there is a diagram on ff. 169v-170 which appears to depict the factions at the 1572 conclave which elected Gregory XIII; it concludes with a list of 'Tutti li capi considerabili al pontificato', all the factors which need to be taken into account in electing a pope; early 17th cent. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'Se sempre fu in ogni occasione difficile impresa', expl. 'Neutrali tra prencipi'.
12. ff. 174-185v. 'Conclave nel quale fù creato Papa il Cardinal de Medici detto poi Pio IV'; 1559. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'Per la lunghezza della sede vacante, che fù di quattro mesi', expl. 'con haversi eletto il nome di Pio Quarto'. For other versions of this account see Add. MSS. 8414 (art. 1(xix), ff. 117-120v) and 8415 (art. 1, ff. 1-45); versions of a different account can be found in Add. A letter, dated 'Gennaro 1655 di Frascati', replying to one with the news of the Pope's death, assessing the suitability of three cardinals 'papabili' - namely Ulderico di Carpegna, Vincenzo Maculani, Domenico Cecchini - in the 'sede vacante' following the death of Innocent X in 1655 (title given in contents list, f. 1: 'Censura in tres Cardinales sede vacante per obitum Urbani 8' [sic]); 1655. [...]', written on behalf of Cardinal [Francesco Adriano] Ceva (died Oct. 1655) to say that he is too ill to attend meetings of the Sacred College (the letter also mentions 'Cardinal [Luigi] Homodei' (or Omodei), created a cardinal in Feb. 1652, who asks for instructions for a forthcoming visit to Milan); circa 1655.
