Modern foliation in pencil '1-503' (followed here); other sequences of old foliation and pagination in ink throughout the volume (arts. 6, 8, 13 belong to one foliated sequence '39-188'). The main series of accounts of (fourteen) conclaves included in this volume and described in art. 5 (Nicholas V to Julius III) is all in the same Italian hand and paginated in a separate sequence throughout ('1-354'). Ranaldi was the 'Custode' of the Vatican Library under the prefecture of Cesare Baronio; on Ranaldi and this work see Generoso Calenzio, La vita e gli scritti del Cardinale Cesare Baronio (Rome, 1907), pp. 722-724. Calenzio refers to an autograph MS. of the text in the Vatican library (cod. Vat. lat. 5561). The work is included in a MS. list of Ranaldi's 'fatighe' in the Vatican Library which Giovanni Mercati transcribes and dates to 'before 27 July 1594' in 'Per la storia della Biblioteca Apostolica...' in Opere minori, vol. 3 (1907-1916), Studi e Testi 78 (Vatican City, 1937), p. 263.
