Paper; ff. 591+iv, plus 14 unfoliated interleaved blanks, 1 after ff. 155, 166, 259, 569 and 576, 2 after ff. 118 and 435, and 5 after f. 589. Modern foliation in pencil '1-591' (followed here). There are two main sequences, among others, of older pagination and foliation: art. 2, pp. '501-675' together with art. 4, pp. '677-843' (duplicating '780-799') (the two articles on Urban VIII and Innocent X form the concluding part of the uniform series of accounts of conclaves found in Add. MSS. 8417 (art. 5), 8418 (art. 1) and 8419 (art. 1)) and arts. 8-9, ff. '1-191' (omitting '111-119'). Composite volume. Circa 270 x 190mm. Horizontal catchwords for art. 7, ff. 350-417. Several Italian hands. Guilford binding of quarter vellum with decorated paper covers over pasteboards.

Two descriptions of the cardinals in the Sacred College after the death of Gregory XV in 1623 with an account (in the same hand) of the conclave which elected Gregory XIII in 1572; 1623. Italian. Copy. Contents as follows: (i) f. 1, 'Discorso nella sede vacante di Gregorio XV', inc, 'Il Cardinal Ludovisi trattò nella sua minor fortuna', expl. 'applaudendo far aquisto di stima et autorità. Finis'; (ii) f. 8v, 'Avviso del conclave di Gregorio XIII', dated from Rome 23 May 1572, inc. 'Vi promessi l'altro giorno', expl. 'da molti centinaia d'anni in quà. State sano'; (iii) f. 15, 'Discorso politico astrologico sopr'il futuro Pontefice', a description of the factions in the Sacred College in 1623, inc. Italian. Copy. Inc. 'Fatte secondo l'antica consuetudine l'essequie', expl. 'nel mezzo de tante caligini, de privati interessi, e dissensioni'.. Old pagination in ink '501-676', continued in art. 4. Another copy in Add. MS. 8414 (art. 2, ff. 168-201).

'Cardinali creati da Urbano VI sino à Urbano VIII (e dopo da Innocentio Xo)', lists and numbers of cardinals created by each Pope from Urban VI (elected 1378) to Innocent X (his final creations dated 2 March 1654, nine months before his death); circa 1655. Italian. Copy. The list proper begins on f. 330; f. 327 is a title-page, followed by two leaves presenting in tabular form the numbers of cardinals created by each Pope, as well as the numbers in the Sacred College at the beginning and end of their respective reigns.
