DECIO AZZOLINI (attributed): Aphorisms on the conclave for the election of Clement IX; 1667. Italian. The aphorisms were traditionally attributed to Cardinal Decio Azzolini the Younger, interim Secretary of State under Innocent X (1644-1655) and Clement IX (1667-1669), and papal escort of Queen Christina of Sweden. It seems that they were in fact written on Azzolini's inspiration by Stefano Pignatelli, the Roman author of a platonic treatise and friend of Francesco Redi: see Decio Azzolini in DBI, 4 (1962), pp. 768-771, in particular pp. 770-771. Other copies in Add. 8333, art. 13, ff. 291-332v, and Rome, Biblioteca Casanatense, MS. 2670, ff. 144-224. Published as Aforismi politici per li Cardinali del Conclave di questo anno 1667 fatti dal Cardinale Azzolini in Il Cardinalismo di Santa Chiesa, diviso in tre parti, pt . iii, book iii (s.l.: s.n., 1668), pp. 336-391, B.L. copy 863.b.4; also in Latin translation as Candidatus papalis dignitatis ejusdemque promotor probe instructus, hoc est eminentiss. Cardinalis Azzolini Aphorismi politici ... Opus incomparabile ex italico in latinum translatum cum commentario de electione Rom. Pontificis Jo. Frider. Mayeri (Osnabrück: Literis Nicolai Spiringi; sumptibus Gothofredi Liebezeiti, 1691), pp. (1)-(19), B.L. copies 1492.i.22 and 5107.b.7. Title (f. 1) 'Afforismi per li Conclavi', inc. (f. 2) 'Afforismi politici per li Cardinali del Conclave di quest'anno 1667 fatti dal Cardinale Decio Azzolini / E' si grande il credito', expl.
