1. ff. 1-294v. 'Diaria Rerum Romanorum' of Stefano Infessura (d. circa 1500), 1294-1494. Latin and Italian. This chronicle of events in Rome from the time of Pope Boniface VIII to that of Pope Alexander VI is an important source for the history of the papacy and Roman politics. Infessura deals summarily with the period 1294-1403, gives more information for 1404-1481, and provides most detail in his account of 1482-1494. O. Tommasini (Istituto Storico Italiano, Fonti per la Storia d’Italia, vol. v; Rome, 1890), which is based on a MS. in the Vatican Archives (arch. di Castello, armar. IX, ord. I r) and contains collations with 55 other MSS. (listed ibid. pp. xxiii-xxv), including this MS. and Add. 8432; 8433, ff. 1-239; 8434, ff. 1-193v; 26802 and 48070. This text belongs to 'class 2' of the manuscripts of the diary (ibid., pp. xxvi, xxvii).
2. ff. 295-324v. Diary of Ludovico Bonconte Monaldesco, of Orvieto, 1327-1340. Italian. Monaldesco's account of events in Italy during the papacy of John XXII and Benedict XII focuses on the political activities of the leading families in Rome and throughout Italy. Inc. 'Io Ludovico di Buonconte Monaldesco nacqui in Orvieto', expl. 'mese muta bona guardia'. It is published in L. A. Muratori (ed.), Fragmenta Annalium Romanorum Italicè Scripta ab Anno 1328 usque ad Annum 1340, Rerum Italicarum Scriptores, xii (1728), pp. 525-542, from Vienna, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, Cod. 5604, item 5, ff. 117-127.
Paper; ff. 323. Contemporary foliation in black ink, 227-452 (beg. f. 1), in upper right corner; numbers 301-309 and 401-409 are represented as 3001, 3002, etc. 280 x 210mm. Left and right margins ruled with folds. Monaldesco's diary is copied in a different hand from that of Infessura's diary; ff. 288-288v is in a third hand. Watermarks: cross, somewhat similar to Haewood, Watermarks, 921 (A.D. 1646, Rome); and bird, with no similar examples in Haewood. Full vellum binding over pasteboards, late 17th or early 18th cent.
