'290' in pencil in upper right corner of f. 1. Purchased, together with Add. 8688 and 8788, from R. H. Evans, 8 December 1830, lot 290 (part).
1. ff. 1-239. 'Diaria Rerum Romanorum' of Stefano Infessura, 1303-1494. Latin and Italian. Inc. 'Manca lo principio. Pontificalmente et dissegli piglia tesauro', expl., with the entry for 4 Febuary 1494, 'et dictum est Magnum Turcum in Constantinopoli mortuum esse'. Further details of this work, the published edition and other MSS. of the diary are included in the description of Add. 8431. This text belongs to 'class 1' of the manuscripts of the diary.
2. ff. 240-280v. Account by Castallo Metallino, one of the thirteen counsellors of Rome, of the families in his own district of the city, apparently 14th or 15th century. Italian and Latin. Inc. in preface 'Castallus Metallinus Civis Romanus unus de tresdecim Consiliariis Urbis', inc. in text 'Como per Noi la più venerata schiatta oggi è Casa delli Cicca', expl. 'che significa amore ardente e fede seccera'. Other MSS. of this text include Vatican Library, Cod. Vat. Lat. 6301, ff. 1-26, and Cod. Ottobon. 2570.
Paper; ff. 280. 280 x 205mm. Left and right margins ruled with folds. Two watermarks of birds, the first somewhat similar to Haewood, Watermarks, 165 (circa A.D. 1670-1680), but without a star above, the other not similar to any examples in Haewood. Quarter vellum binding with green marbled paper covers, red ‘filature’ and vellum along fore-edges. Pasted on to the upper and lower covers are similar cuttings from an unidentified 18th-century green leather, gold-tooled armorial binding.
