DIARY OF SEBASTIANO DE BRANCA DE' TALINI; 1485-1517. Italian. Copy, late 16th or early 17th cent. A diary of events in Rome from the time of Pope Innocent VIII to that of Pope Leo X. Inc. 'Adi 3 di maggio 1485 fù ammazzato Bartolomeo Santa Croce', expl. 'et poi lò papa volse che stesse in Palazzo'. Extracts of the text, taken from this manuscript, are published in M. Creighton, A History of the Papacy from the Great Schism to the Sack of Rome, new edn, vol. v (1897), pp. 331-340. The present MS. is listed in Palma di Cesnola, no. 1549, p. 122. There is another copy of the manuscript in New Zealand, Auckland Public Library, Med. MS. S. 1572, 1572a. Former binding has '26' in black ink in lower left corner of front pastedown, 'R2' in brown ink in lower right corner of back pastedown and '341' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8431, 8434 and 8435, from R. H. Evans, 8 December 1830, lot 341 (part).
Paper; ff. 80. Contemporary foliation in brown ink. 265 x 190mm. Watermarks: crossed keys, with no similar examples in Haewood, Watermarks, and a bird somewhat similar to Haewood 165 (circa A.D. 1670-1680). British Library binding. Former full vellum binding over pasteboards, late 17th or early 18th cent., preserved separately.
