DIARY of Cornelio Firmano; 1565-1571. Latin. Copy. Firmano (1532-1588) was Master of ceremonies at the Papal Court from Aug. 1565 until Jan. 1574 when he was elected Bishop of Osimo. His diary covers the papacies from Pius IV to Pius V. Inc. (f. 1) 'In nomine Domini Jesu Christi, Ego Cornelius Firmanus de maxerata die mercurii 22 mensis Augusti cepi possessionem officii cerimoniarum'. Other copies of the diary in Rome, Vatican Library, Cod. Vat. lat. 12283 and Barb. lat. 2805. The section of Firmano's diary which records the election and coronation of Pius V is published in Della solenne incoronazione del duca Cosimo Medici in gran duca di Toscana fatta dal sommo pontefice Pio V, (Florence, 1819) (BL copy 605.F.2). Other extracts of Firmano's diary published in J. B. Gatticus, Acta Caeremonialia Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae (Rome, 1753), pp. 335-336, 392-393, 447, (BL copy 16.e.11). No division in the text marks the separate years, which are as follows: 1565 (ff. 1-5v), 1566 (ff. 5v-45), 1567 (ff. 45-61), 1568 (ff. 61-93v), 1569 (ff. 93v-121), 1570 (ff. 121-206v), 1571 (ff. 206v-221). The diary, which closes, (f. 260v) 'et Pontifex dixit versa et orationem consuetas ac etiam versa de Sancto Marco ora pro nobis Beate Marce et oratione de ipso et rediit at palatium', is followed by (ff. 224-244v) a list, written in alphabetical order, of the events and ceremonies presided over by Firmano and two texts entitled (ff. 245-252v) 'Supplicationes et misse pro liberatione Christianorum pro bello turcharum contra Imperatorem' and (ff. 253-260v) 'Processio et missa pro gratiandi actione pro victoria Regis Franciae contra Ugonoctas habita'. Old shelfmark in ink '11' in lower left corner of front pastedown. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '343' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8364, 8447, 8449, 8450, 8451, 8452, by Thomas Thorpe, 10 Dec. 1830, lot 343 (part) and subsequently given to the British Museum in exchange for lot 604.
Paper; ff. 260. Modern foliation in pencil. 305 x 225mm. Catchwords on every page. One 17th-cent Italian hand with later marginal additions. Watermark: bird, similar to Heawood, Watermarks, 161 (1648, Rome) but with the letter 'G' above the bird. Full vellum binding over pasteboards, 17th cent.
