GUIDO GUALTIERI: Ephemerides Sixti Papae V; 1585-1588. Latin. Copy, 17th cent. Diary of the internal affairs of Church States between April 1585 and June 1588, recorded by Guido Gualtieri, Secretary to Sixtus V. Title (f. 1) 'Sixti Quinti Pontificis Optimi Maximi Ephemerides Guido Gualterio Auctore'. Inc. (f. 2) 'Si scribentibus illud praecipue propositum esse debet, ut legenda, et pro futura scribant', expl. (f. 430v) 'Anniversaria Pontificis coronatio celebrata est ab omnibusque optatum ut in plurimos annos celebratur'. There are many survivng copies of Gualterius' Ephemerides, including: Rome, Vittorio Emanuele Library, Fondo Gesuit. 164; Vatican Library, Urb. 813; Vallicella Library I, 60; Florence, National Library, Cod. Capponi 1086. The present MS. has not been published in full but is summarised in T. Gar, 'Il proemio delle efemeride del Pontificato di Sisto V', in Archivio Storico Italiano, App. 1, Tom. 1, 1842-4, pp.343-58, (BL copy PP. 3557.2). No division in the text marks the separate years, which are as follows: 1585 (ff. 21v-130, 1586 (ff. 130-226), 1587 (ff. 226-376v), 1588 (ff. 376-430). 'Tomo 101' in black ink in upper left corner of f. 1. Old shelfmark in ink '3' in lower left corner of front pastedown. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '343' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8364, 8447, 8448, 8450, 8451, 8452, by Thomas Thorpe, 10 Dec. 1830, lot 343 (part) and subsequently given to the British Museum in exchange for lot 604.
