Diary of ceremonies and events which took place in 1598 during the reign of Clement VIII, recorded by Giovanni Mucantio (1557-1617), Master of Ceremonies at the Papal Court. Information on Mucantio in Bibliografia Romana. Notizie della vita e delle opere degli scrittori romani dal secolo XI fino ai nostri giorni (Roma, 1880), pp. 188-189. Title (f. 3) 'Diarorum Caeremonialium Joannis Pauli Mucantii Romani J U Doctoris, et Caerimonairum Apostolicarum Magistri'. Inc. (f. 3) 'Ferraria ol[im] legitimam lineam estensium cum morte Alphonsi Secundi finitam, ad sanctam sedem Apostolicam, et Romanum Pontificem directum Dominium devoluta', expl. (f. 355) 'Ad laudem et gloriam suam, et huius memorandi et felicissimi itineris perpetuam memoriam'. Other copies are Rome, Boncompagni Archives, Cod. F. 39 and Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, MS. lat. 12547. Extracts of Mucantio's diary published in J. B. Gatticus, Acta Caeremonialia Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae (Rome, 1753), pp. 396-407, 426-7, 447, 452-454, 456-457, 478-479, (BL copy 16.e.11). In the present MS. the text is divided into the following sections: (a) ff. 3-6, 'De itinere Clementis VIII Pontifice optimus Maximus Ferrariam versus, rebusque gestis in eadem Civitate, et de eius reditu ad Urbem, et reliquis quae acciderunt per totum annum MDIIC', (b) ff. 7-8, 'Ordine, et Cerimonie che si potranno observare dalla Santità di Nostro Signore Clemente Papa 8°, tanto nel partirse quanto per tutto il viaggio che farà da Roma a Ferrara e prima del Santissimo Sacramento', (c) ff. 9-12, 'Con che ordine o cerimonie potra partire il santissimo sacramento di Roma et poi successivamente entrare nelle Citta Terre, o luoghi dove si havrà da fermare o ponere la notte', (d) ff. 13-15, 'Della partità di Nostro di Roma et dell entrata semplice, che farà sua Santità nelle Terre, luoghi Castelli, ò Città per tutto il viaggio dove si fermera la matina. A pranso ò la sera a dormire', (e) ff. 16-22, 'Dell entrata solenne che sua Santità volendo potrà fare in alcune Città principali, et insigne', (f) ff. 23-49v, 'Dell entrata Pontificale del Papa con piviale, et Regno che sua Santità volendo potrà fare in Ferrara', (g) ff. 50-160, 'Clementi VIII Pontifice optimus Maximus Christiane fidei propugnaculo Religionis, et ecclesiasticae ditionis propagatori Sanctitate, et pietate admirabili doctrina, prudentia, et rerum agendarum experientia singulari. Old shelfmark in ink '53' in lower left corner of front pastedown. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '343' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8364, 8447, 8448, 8449, 8450, 8452, by Thomas Thorpe, 10 Dec. 1830, lot 343 (part) and subsequently given to the British Museum in exchange for lot 604.
Paper; ff. 355. Old foliation in ink 1-712 (ff. 1-355). 310 x 230mm. Catchwords on every page. One 17th-cent. Italian hand with later marginal additions. Watermark: bird, same as Haewood, Watermarks, 161 (1648, Rome) but with letters A and P on either side of the bird. Full vellum binding over pasteboards, 17th cent.
