Title:

DIARIES OF PAOLO ALALEONA; 1586-1637. Latin. Copies. Alaleona (1585-1638) was Master of Ceremonies at the Papal Court and private cameriere to Paul V, and helped compile the Ceremonial of the Conclaves issued by Gregory XV in 1622. His nine-volume diary covering the papacies from Pope Sixtus V to Pope Urban VIII remained unpublished: information on Alaleona and a list of MSS. copies of his diaries in Roman libraries in Bibliografia Romana. Notizie della vita e delle opere degli scrittori romani dal secolo XI fino ai nostri giorni (Roma, 1880). The present MSS. are listed in Palma di Cesnola, no. 1555, p. 122, and in Iter Italicum, IV (1989), p. 68. Old shelfmark in ink '48', '6', '12', '15', '33', '8', '13', '7', respectively in lower left corners of front pastedowns of Add. 8452, 8453, 8454, 8456, 8457, 8458, 8459, 8460. Possibly identifiable with Mattei MSS. 180-188 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 8v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '344' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedowns. Purchased from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 344.
