STATUTES of the Wool Guild in Rome to 1582; late 17th cent. Latin. Copy. A copy of the statutes of the Wool Guild in Rome, issued in 1321, enlarged in 1425-1426, and revised up to 1582. The text of the statutes was published from this MS. by E. Stevenson, Statuti delle Arti dei Merciai e della Lana di Roma... (Rome, 1893), pp. 115-264, after comparing it with another MS. in the Biblioteca Chigiana of Rome (MS. H.III.58), now in the Vatican Library. Inc. (f. 1) 'Christi nomine Amen / Cum hoc sit quod ex forma cuiusdam Statuti positi in volumine Statutorum Artis Lanariorum Magnificae Urbis Roame contineatur', expl. (f. 124) 'perpetuis futuris temporibus irrevocabiliter observari mandarunt omni meliori modo super quibus', followed by a notarial subscription, dated 1582, and notes (ff. 124v-125v) relating to years 1574-1654. Imperfect table of contents (ff. 3v-6v), up to chapter lxxxvi (f. 75). Ex-libris of Cardinal Giuseppe Garampi (front pastedown) 'Ex bibliotheca Josephi Garampii'. Old shelfmark in ink '17' in lower spine: identifiable with Marini MS. 17 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 34v. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '568' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8542, 8543, 8565, 8569, and 8627, from R. H. Evans, 8 Dec. 1830, lot 568 (part).
Paper; ff. 125+iii. Current foliation following old foliation in ink '1-125'. 220 x 158mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. One Italian hand. 17th-cent. Italian binding of full vellum; edges mottled in red and black. B.L. gilt-tooled title 'Statuta mercatorum artis pannorum lanae in urbe Roma / 1406'.
