EXCERPTS FROM THE RULES of the Apostolic Chancery; circa 1611 (see f. 67). Latin. Copy. The so-called Regulae Cancellariae Apostolicae were renewed upon the election of a new pope until 1730, when the 72 rules that are now in use were established (cf. Del Re, La Curia romana, pp. 285-286). The present MS. contains excerpts from the text of rules in force during the papacy of Paul V (1605-1621). Title (f. 1) 'Regula [sic] Cancellariae', inc. 'Regulae Cancellariae expirant per mortem Pontificis', expl. (f. 20) 'non suffragatur ad effectum (?) alternativae oradin. decis. 475.p'. Old shelfmark in brown ink '109' in lower spine: identifiable with Mattei MS. 109 in Guilford's catalogue Add. 8220, f. 30. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '197' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with 8468, 8469, 8470, and 8473, from R. H. Evans, 8 December. 1830, lot 197 (part).
Paper; ff. 202+xi, plus 1 unfoliated blank after f. 21. 280 x 212mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. One Italian hand. 17th-cent. Italian binding of full vellum.
