EXCERPTS FROM THE DIARIES of the Auditors of the Sacra Romana Rota Francisco de Peña, Giovanni Battista Coccini, Angelo Celsi, Giovanni Giacomo Cavallerini; 1588-1692. Latin. Copy. The Diaria rotalia or privati of the auditors (i.e. judges) were journals of the proceedings of the Rota, the ecclesiastical tribunal that dealt with civil cases within papal lands. Francisco de Peña was auditor from 1588 and dean from 1604 to his death in 1612; Giovanni Battista Coccini was auditor from 1600 and succeded de Peña as dean from 1612 until his death in 1641; Angelo Celsi was auditor from 1645 to 1664, when he was elected Cardinal: cf. DBI, 23 (1979), p. 470; Giovanni Giacomo Cavallerini was auditor from 1689 to 1692, when he was nominated papal nuncio to France: cf. DBI, 22 (1979), pp. 700-701. XIV-XIX) (Vatican City, 1994); see also Boyle, A Survey of the Vatican Archives, pp. 90-92. Contemporary tables of contents (ff. 1-11) only of the Peña and Coccini's diaries. Old shelfmarks '148' (in brown ink in fifth spine compartment) and 'M.IV.L' (in black ink in f. i verso). Note on detached paper slip (between ff. 111v-112) 'MonSignor [Antonio] Casali Presidente Grascia'. Owned by Frederick North, 5th Earl of Guilford, but lacking his armorial bookplate. '197' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with Add. 8466, 8468, 8469, and 8473, from R. H. Evans, 8 December. 1830, lot 197 (part).

2. ff. 37-54v. 'Ex Diario R.P.D. Coccini Rotae Romanae Auditoris'; 10 April 1600 - 6 Aug. 1632. Inc. 'In nomine Domini Lunae 20 Martii 1600. Anno aetatis meae 28, mens 2 die 14. Natus enim de anno 1572, die 6 Januarii, hora 3a, et tribus quadrantibus cum dimidio'.
3. ff. 54v-248. Excerpts from the diary of Angelo Celsi; 6 Nov. 1647 - 14 Jan. 1664. Inc. 'Die mercuris 6 Novembris 1647. Fuit Rota in Palatio Vaticano, in qua intervenerunt Auditores omnes, sed nemo proposuit causas, sed tantum memoralia'. Celsi's diary follows Coccini's one without break.
4. ff. 250-285. 'Diarium R.P.D. Cavallerini Sacrae Rotae Romanae Auditoris Romani'; 2 Aug. 1689 - 2 June 1692. Inc. ' Anno 1689 / Postquam deo dante per annos fere viginti a die 12 Septembris 1669'.
Paper; ff. 287+xii; one leaf cancelled after f. 6; f. 249 blank. Modern foliation in pencil '1-285' (followed here), omitting nos. 101, 177. Old pagination in ink '1-541' (ff. 12-285), including blanks, correcting previous erroneous pagination but leaving nos. '521-522' between '517' and '518'. 341 x 235mm. Horizontal catchwords on each leaf. One Italian hand. Late 17th- early 18th-cent. Italian binding of full vellum; restored with 19th-cent. vellum covers pasted onto original pasteboards. B.L. gilt-title 'Diaria R.P.D. Peniae et Cavallerini Sacrae Rotae Romanae Auditorum 1588-1692'.
