RELAZIONE of Rome; circa 1734 (brief dated 1734 mentioned on f. 180). Italian. Copy. The text relates to the administration of civil affairs in the Papal Curia, and was possibly compiled during the papacy of Pope Clement XII (1730-1740). Title (f. 1) 'Raggionamento della Curia Romana', repeated at f. 2. Dedicatory epistle to unknown (ff. 2-4v) 'Voi non potevate o Signore con argomento più certo farmi conoscere il merito del vostro ingegno', preface (ff. 5-8) 'Della Romana Curia / Proemio / Quasi dalle ceneri dell'antica Curia', inc. (f. 9) 'Capitolo Primo / Del Papa e sua Elezione / Capo Supremo della Romana Curia è il Papa', expl. (f. 249v) 'e di pregarvi dal Cielo ogni più soda felicità'. Text divided into 41 chapters; marginal notations throughout. Contemporary table of contents (ff. 250-251). Ex-libris of Antonio Clari (f. 1), with note (f. 1v) on his payment for the MS. 'Antonius Clari solvit pro copia huius libri manuscripti scuta duodecim et liras 60'. Armorial bookplate of the Hon. Frederick North, later 5th Earl of Guilford, with shelfmark 'L/21/B' (front pastedown). '197' in pencil in upper left corner of front pastedown. Purchased, together with 8466, 8468, 8469, and 8470, from R. H. Evans, 8 December. 1830, lot 197 (part).
Paper; ff. 251+iii, plus 36 unfoliated blanks between chapters throughout. Old pagination in ink '1-568' (ff. 2-249, and following blank), including blanks. 268 x 190mm. Horizontal catchwords occasionally on each page. One Italian hand. Mid 18th-cent. Italian binding of full vellum; edges mottled in light red and brown.
